A man is in front of her on the bike holding onto the handles." width="597" height="1024"/>

Nisha, a 17-year-old girl from a low-income family in Lodhran District, lives with her parents and four siblings in a cramped two-room house. To accommodate the family, the kitchen and washroom are located outside. Her father, a mason, earns just 800 rupees a day (approx. $4.30 AUD), barely enough to meet basic needs. Because meat is too expensive, the family follows a vegetarian diet - yet they often go hungry.

Despite these hardships, Nisha dreamed of becoming a midwife - a profession that would allow her to serve her community and support her family. However, the nearest vocational college is a 30-minute rickshaw ride away, and the six-day-a-week, 18-month course was financially out of reach.

The Sustainable and Resilient Community Development Project (SRDP), led by The Salvation Army, stepped in to provide financial assistance for both travel and tuition fees, making it possible for Nisha to pursue her training. This support is not just helping her gain a qualification-it's opening the door to a secure government job, which will offer long-term financial stability for her and her family.

Nisha's journey illustrates how SRDP:

Removes financial barriers to vocational education for marginalised women.

Builds pathways out of poverty through skill development and employment opportunities.

Promotes gender equity by supporting women's education, livelihoods and financial independence.

Strengthens community health by training local women in essential services like midwifery.

With SRDP's support, Nisha is on track to become a qualified midwife. Her success will not only transform her own life but also improve maternal and child health outcomes in her community. Her story is a powerful example of how targeted development initiatives can break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation of women.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).

As a result of the training provided by the project, participants like Joseph have seen considerable improvements in their livelihoods. Prior to the project, Joseph had worked various jobs but had found it challenging to know exactly what to do with his life. After receiving training on sustainable agriculture, he decided to clear the land he had at home and use it for farming. For the last two seasons he has grown a variety of produce including maize, beans and sweet potatoes. This has not only enabled him to provide food for his family, but he has been able to sell the surplus to his neighbours. This has increased his overall nutrition and food security, as well as provided him with additional income.

<img src="http://www.salvos.com.au/image?src=/scribe/sites/international-development/files/Case_study/Figure_1_Joseph.jpg&width=648&height=486" alt="Joseph at his farm where he has been able to produce food for his family.
The project also assisted in building pit latrines in a primary school in his community. Joseph supported the project to dig the holes for the latrines and provided local materials to help build the structures. He has expressed that he is able to make better decisions on health matters since receiving training from the project.

Soap and savings - building resilient communities in Malawi

TSA Malawi's WASH, Resilience and Food Security project supports rural communities in Malawi to have improved access to water, sanitation, hygiene, improved food security and access to financial services. The project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and Swedish Government (Sida) though the Swedish Mission Council. It is implemented by The Salvation Army Malawi Territory.

Judith Kalima, a mother of four, lives with her family in Salima District Malawi. She explained to us that in her rural community it is challenging for women to find stable work to support their families. She lacked access to financial services and decision-making over her finances.

"Before the project, I had nothing to rely on. Now, I can make and sell soap with my fellow women from our soap-making group, and I no longer worry about where the next meal will come from. I feel proud because I can now support my family. My children are in school and I no longer feel like a burden. I am part of something meaningful."

Judith has joined a Village Savings and Loan program which provides access to safe and low-interest loans. She has joined a soap-making community-based organisation and finds a sense of community with the other members. She is able to pay school fees and meet other household needs through the income generated. Through the skills learnt, she is able to manage her finances and, as she explained, her confidence has grown.

"Thank you for your resilience and commitment to achieving long-term change for people in need around the world. Day by day, person by person, community by community - together we are improving the lives of vulnerable people and giving them hope for the future. Because of your support, we are seeing communities becoming healthy and safe. Individuals are discovering sustainable livelihoods and children are becoming less vulnerable to exploitation. People have improved access to food, clean water and hygiene facilities, and received education around safety and rights. Importantly, our mission support projects are also nurturing communities spiritually through local corps and officers. I am grateful to all of our partners for your ongoing commitment to working with SAID. Enjoy this snapshot of what we have achieved together!"

This newsletter focuses on three areas - Livelihoods, Child Rights and Health. You will be encouraged and inspired as you read the transformative stories of men, women and children who are now living with hope for the future.

The KiWash project in Malawi is training farmers in sustainable, conservation agricultural methods. This project has also impacted 2,325 people in 465 households giving them access to safe drinking water close to their homes.

The Kwetu project in Tanzania is aimed at ending human trafficking, and a new project in Uganda is training women, girls, men and boys with skills that are empowering adolescent girls and keeping them in school for as long as possible.

All of this is only possible through the kindness and generosity of our donors, which supports the hard work and diligence of our teams in Australia and overseas.

With support from the Australian Government, through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), the Salvation Army Malawi is implementing the Karonga WASH and Food Security (KiWASH) Project in northern Malawi.

By training farmers in Conservation Agriculture and providing vegetable seeds, the KiWASH project is assisting farmers to produce more food in their gardens, which can increase household food security and provide households with a source of income.

Forty-year-old Anna, a project participant, is widowed and previously supported her two daughters and two grandchildren by travelling to the mountainside to produce charcoal. However, selling charcoal did not provide enough income for her family.

After receiving Chinese cabbage and mustard seeds from the KiWASH project, Anna established a backyard garden. Implementing the Conservation Agriculture methods she learned from The Salvation Army, and with support from the community Conservation Agriculture Committee and project staff, Anna was able to harvest enough to feed her family.

Anna explains "My vegetables grew well to the extent that I had enough to eat and surplus to sell to people within the community which gave me opportunity to stop going to the mountain to burn charcoal and focus on other productive things at my home. I now have time to support my family well."

Selling vegetables has changed Anna's life in unexpected ways. Because she does not have to travel long distances to source charcoal, Anna has more time to care for her family and even to follow up their performance in school.

Hope and Ambition Thrive in North-West Kenya

In the north-west of Kenya, lies Turkana, the poorest county in the country, with 95% of the population living below the poverty line.

The dry and erratic climate causes many problems with accessing food and water, while its remoteness means there is a lack of education and health provisions. The Salvation Army is working to address all of these issues through an ambitious project looking to improve access to clean water and safe sanitation, train communities on the use of drought-resistant crops and how to minimise their water use. Alongside all of this we will be helping to improve people's livelihood through training, livestock provision and the creation of savings groups.

Leah Lopua is a mother of 11 children and the chairperson of her local savings group in the small village of Nanam in Lokichoggio.

Leah was elected because of her evident leadership skills in the village. She leads a group of 40 women who meet weekly. From the pool of money kept in a metal box with three padlocks, the group members can borrow small loans. Using the loans, most of the women are engaging in livestock businesses, grocery and bead making.

Leah says, 'We joined the group since life was very difficult for each of us. We decided we needed to support one another.' She continues to say that the women now are able to afford to purchase food for their families and do not rely on outsiders' help. They can also provide school fees for their children.

Leah is very hopeful that the women in her group will continue to overcome poverty and support their families.

Report by UK International Development Office

However, the sheer grit and persistent dedication of our team and counterparts worldwide - to help those who are doing it tough, has meant SAID has continued to deliver the support and care that many in vulnerable communities seek.

This newsletter contains a snapshot of the various SAID activities over the last year - from the agility of our teams and our response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, to stories like the Ki WASH project that is providing communities in rural Malawi greater access to safe and clean drinking water, improved sanitation and hygiene facilities, better food security and greater resilience to climate change and its impact on livelihoods.

Water - The Source of Health and Hope

In 1998, a possible contamination of Sydney's drinking water caused widespread alarm and three million people were advised to boil their drinking water. Yet 2.1 billion people (or three in every 10 people), live with unsafe water every day. Six in 10, or 4.5 billion, lack safely managed sanitation.

Clean water is the foundation of good health. Without good health, productive lives become difficult to achieve.

The Salvation Army's WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) programs, funded by our water and health sponsors and our priority sponsors, and run in conjunction with local partners, are successfully helping communities across Kenya, Malawi and South Africa improve their health and start planning for better futures.

Waterborne Illnesses Derail Education

At Mikoikoni Deb Primary School, head teacher David Mwangi says, "Having water for cooking, let alone drinking, was a big challenge. We used to borrow 20-litre jerry cans from our neighbour. The water that pupils drew from the water source outside the school was yellowish in colour and waterborne diseases were a common thing. But now we rarely hear of such challenges because we have enough water for cooking, drinking and cleaning latrines, classrooms, offices and watering of seedlings."

Prior to joining a Salvation Army Self-Help Group, Sapra was doing odd jobs - searching through the dumps in the slum to find things she could sell. Her financial situation meant that she couldn't provide her children the support they needed.

When Sapra joined the group, she purchased a sewing machine with the loan she received and started a tailoring business at home. Through this opportunity, Sapra is now earning 350 rupees ($6) a day, which enables her to pay the bills and support her children.

The Self Help Groups allow women like Sapra, usually mothers and grandmothers, to encourage one another and build each other's confidence and self-esteem. Women receive loans to start a small business or receive skills training. While the mothers are at the program, their children can attend literacy classes to improve their reading and writing skills. This is the only form of education some of them receive.

For just $35 a month, you can help empower women like Sapra to build a better life for her children, her family and community.

You can help make a difference!

WASH Program Brings School to Life for Caroline

Caroline and her friends were often sick from waterborne diseases and couldn't attend schol. Through the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) program, their lives have changed for the better. They can now safely wash their hands, drink and cook with the clean water.

Contaminated water was a huge problem at Kwa Kavita School in Kenya, where 11-year-old Caroline attended as a grade 6 student. Knowing that it could lead to sickness, most children weren't drinking at all. Consequently, Caroline and her schoolmates were often lethargic, with no energy to learn or play.

Also, the school's latrines were old and smelly and provided no privacy for girls, who would refuse to attend school at certain times of the month.

Recently, the school became part of the Kenya WASH program. Using donations from sponsors, three 16,000L water tanks were installed to catch and store rainwater, staff toilets were built, four new toilets for girls and three for the boys were constructed and training in hygiene given to all staff and students.

Caroline has become the President of the Hygiene Club and is now responsible for ensuring that all students learn and practise safe hygiene.

To celebrate the completion of the project, 120 people from the schoo and surrounding villages gathered for an opening ceremony. In her speech, Caroline outlined the previous problem - water shortage, old, dirty toilets and illness. She said that as a result of the WASH program, "we can now boast an improved school population because water is available in the school... the rate of absenteeism has greatly decreased" and "the handwashing machines are doing a miracle. We are able to clean our hands after the toiliet and before meals".

Children have formed the habit of handwashing and are teaching their parents about hygiene. Some parents have started building a toilet at home. With large enough tanks to store rain, the school has clean water during the dry periods. This is a great result for the whole community. This is one of many success stories of the WASH program.

You can help make a difference!
